Understanding Transits

Your birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the moment you were born.

Transits compare today's sky with the natal map. The inner wheel stays; the outer ring moves.

That pattern remains the foundation of your natal chart throughout your life.

But the planets don't stop moving.

Every day, the Sun, Moon and planets continue their journeys through the zodiac, forming new relationships with the positions in your birth chart.

Astrology calls these changing planetary movements transits.

Transits are one of the main ways astrology explores the difference between:

your underlying birth pattern

and

what may be particularly active for you now.

What is a transit?

At its simplest, a transit describes the current position of a planet.

If Saturn is currently moving through Aries, that is a collective astronomical position.

Everyone on Earth shares the same basic planetary sky.

But astrology becomes personal when we compare that current position with your natal chart.

A transiting planet may:

move through one of your natal houses;

enter the same sign as a natal planet;

or form an aspect to one of your natal placements.

This creates a personalised transit.

Current sky versus natal chart

This distinction is important.

Suppose Jupiter is currently in Leo.

That is part of the collective sky.

But Jupiter in Leo may fall in:

one person's relationship house;

another person's career house;

and another person's home and family area.

It may also form significant aspects to different natal planets in each chart.

So while everyone experiences the same astronomical planetary movement, the astrological interpretation can be very different from person to person.

This is why Astralway doesn't assume that a generic daily horoscope applies equally to everyone born under the same Sun sign.

What is a transiting aspect?

As planets move, they form changing angular relationships with the planets in your birth chart.

These are known as transiting aspects.

Some of the major aspects commonly used in Western astrology include:

Conjunction — 0°

Sextile — 60°

Square — 90°

Trine — 120°

Opposition — 180°

Different aspects are traditionally interpreted as describing different types of interaction.

A trine may suggest greater ease or flow.

A square may indicate tension requiring adjustment or action.

An opposition can highlight polarity or competing demands.

A conjunction can strongly emphasise the planets involved.

But no aspect should automatically be classified as simply "good" or "bad".

Context matters.

Fast and slow transits

Not every transit has the same importance or duration.

The Moon moves quickly through the zodiac, changing signs approximately every two and a half days.

Its transits can describe short-lived emotional or atmospheric shifts.

The Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars operate across somewhat longer periods.

The outer planets move much more slowly.

Jupiter takes approximately twelve years to travel through the zodiac.

Saturn takes around twenty-nine years.

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move more slowly still.

Their significant contacts with a natal chart can therefore form part of much longer periods of development or change.

Astralway needs to distinguish between:

a temporary influence

and

a major longer-term cycle.

A transit is not an event

This is one of the most important things to understand.

A transit does not necessarily correspond with one external event.

Suppose Saturn forms a significant aspect to your natal Sun.

That doesn't allow Astralway to say:

“This specific thing will happen on this date.”

The transit may instead describe a period in which themes associated with Saturn and the Sun become more prominent.

Depending on the chart and circumstances, that might involve:

responsibility;

limits;

commitment;

authority;

identity;

confidence;

work;

or long-term development.

The symbolism creates a range of possibilities rather than one guaranteed outcome.

The natal chart determines context

A current transit only becomes truly personal when interpreted in relation to your birth chart.

Astralway can ask:

Which natal planet is being activated?

Which house is involved?

What does that planet represent within your chart?

How exact is the transit?

How long will it remain relevant?

Are other major transits occurring at the same time?

This creates a much richer interpretation than:

"Saturn is in Aries, so everyone will experience the same thing."

Transits through houses

As planets move through the zodiac, they also move through the houses of your natal chart.

This can bring different areas of life into focus.

For example, a planet moving through a house associated with career may correspond with a different area of emphasis from the same planet moving through a relationship-related house.

Again, the planet itself is only part of the interpretation.

Astralway considers:

what is moving

and

where in your chart it is moving.

Multiple transits happen at once

Your chart is never experiencing only one transit.

At any moment, numerous planetary relationships are occurring simultaneously.

Some are minor.

Some are fleeting.

Others may be unusually significant.

This creates one of the problems Astralway is designed to solve.

Simply listing every transit can produce a huge amount of information without telling you what actually matters.

The Insight Engine can instead prioritise according to factors such as:

strength

duration

exactness

personal relevance

and

whether other timing systems reinforce the same theme.

What is an orb?

An aspect doesn't usually need to be mathematically exact to be considered active.

Astrologers use an allowable range known as an orb.

For example, if a transiting planet is approaching an exact 90-degree square to a natal planet, the transit may already be considered active before it reaches precisely 90 degrees.

Different astrologers and astrological techniques use different orb ranges.

The closer an aspect becomes to exact, the more astrologically significant it is generally considered within that particular technique.

For an Astralway user, you don't need to calculate orbs yourself.

They are part of the underlying calculation that helps determine which transits deserve greater attention.

Applying and separating transits

A transit can also be:

applying — moving towards exactness;

or

separating — moving away after becoming exact.

This can add useful timing context.

An applying transit may describe a theme that is building.

An exact transit represents the closest angular relationship.

A separating transit may describe a theme beginning to move out of its most concentrated phase.

But real planetary movement can make this more complicated.

Retrogrades and repeated transits

Because planets sometimes appear to move backwards from Earth's perspective — a phenomenon known as retrograde motion — a slower-moving planet can form the same aspect to a natal placement more than once.

A transit might become exact:

once while moving forwards;

again during retrograde motion;

and once more after the planet turns direct.

This can create an extended period in which a theme develops through several stages rather than appearing on one isolated date.

Astralway can therefore treat some transits as windows of time, rather than single-day events.

Transits versus Vedic Dashas

Astralway uses several forms of timing, and they shouldn't be confused.

A Western transit asks:

Where are the planets now in relation to my natal chart?

A Vedic Dasha asks:

Which planetary period is active within my personal Jyotish timeline?

Everyone shares the same current planetary positions.

Everyone does not share the same Dasha.

The two systems therefore provide different kinds of timing information.

When both independently highlight similar themes, Astralway may identify that as cross-tradition convergence.

Transits and the Current Window

Transits form an important part of Astralway's Current Window.

Rather than displaying every planetary movement with equal importance, Astralway can identify which current influences are most relevant to you.

This may include:

a major slow-moving transit;

a shorter activation;

an important lunar event;

or several overlapping influences.

The question isn't simply:

What is happening in the sky?

It is:

What is happening in the sky that appears particularly relevant to your chart now?

Does a difficult transit mean something bad will happen?

No.

Astrological language can sometimes make certain planets and aspects sound alarming.

Saturn may be described as difficult.

Pluto may be described as destructive.

Squares may be described as negative.

Astralway avoids treating these symbols as predictions of bad events.

A challenging transit can correspond with:

pressure;

effort;

restructuring;

confronting something;

developing resilience;

ending an outdated pattern;

or taking something more seriously.

Likewise, an apparently easy transit doesn't guarantee a wonderful outcome.

Opportunity still needs context and participation.

How Astralway uses transits

Within the Astralway Insight Engine, transits provide one of the main links between your natal chart and the present moment.

Astralway can consider:

which planets are currently active;

what parts of your natal chart they are activating;

how significant those contacts are;

how long they may remain relevant;

and what other timing systems are showing.

If a major Western transit highlights professional change while your Vedic and Chinese timing independently place emphasis on work or responsibility, that theme may deserve greater attention.

If the other systems emphasise something entirely different, Astralway can preserve that contrast.

Timing without certainty

Transits can help describe periods when particular themes may become more active.

They cannot remove uncertainty from life.

Your circumstances matter.

Your choices matter.

Other people's choices matter.

And the same astrological symbolism can manifest in many different ways.

Astralway therefore uses transits as timing context, not as a fixed schedule of future events.

The purpose isn't to tell you exactly what will happen.

It's to help you understand what may deserve your attention while a particular pattern is active.

Key takeaways

  • A transit is the current sky compared with your natal chart.
  • Everyone shares the sky; houses and aspects make it personal.
  • Transits describe periods of emphasis, not scheduled events.
